The fan club is a wonderful idea. The families of Bud and Lou should be praised for all the great work they do in keeping the boys in the public eye. Wouldn't mine being a member myself.

Thirty-Six years ago, we lost a friend and one of the greatest performers from early theatre - By keeping the memories alive, he and those like him are never really gone - We salute Bud Abbott; Strange as it may seem...he glibly created a world that had to be accepted as true, lest we not be caught up in the genuine scheme he parlayed - To Bud, He's on First

Allen Swift has left us. He was known for doing many cartoon voices including Simon Bar Sinister in Underdog, Odie in King Leonardo and several voices in the classic Rankin-Bass movie, "Mad Monster Party." He was also known for hosting the Popeye cartoon show as "Captain Allen Swift" - Cartoon Brew sets the dates as September 10, 1956 to September 23, 1960 - on WPIX in New York. He did many other voices as well. Rest in Peace, Allen.

Sadly,we lost another talented performer.. Mr.Meinhardt Rabbe.."The Munchkin Land Coroner" from MGM's 1939 movie version of"The Wizard Of Oz!" passed away this past Friday April 9,2010. Mr.Rabbe sucummbed to a heart attack..he was living in a community in Orange Park,Fl. He was 94 years old. A former performer with circuses and in vaudeville. he was chosen to play "The Medical Examiner" for "Munchkinland"..because was able to speak properly the lines for his song. Although his scenes with Ms.Garland's"Dorothy Gale" and Mr.Charles Becker's"Munchkincity Mayor"was brief. And his dialogue was pre-dubbed by singer Rad Robinson (A member of The Ken Darby Singers)..he was able to create an inconic figuire. Who remained popular with moviegoers and with tv viewers young and old for many years. Mr.Rabbe was also one of many little people to play "Little Oscar"..who help to promote "Oscar Meyer"cold cuts and hot dogs.(The other former "WOZ"performer..who also played"Little Oscar"in tv commercials was Jerry Maren.. one of the three singing reps of"The Munchkinland Lollypop Guild")at many personal appearances. He would leave the entertainment industry to become a business manager. But? Many years later..When"The Wizard Of Oz"became famous because of the film's exposure on tv reruns and on the home video market. He would make many peersonal appearances at many venues..including "The International Wizard Of Oz Club's" conventions in Chitanago,New York(The birthplace of the "Oz"books author Mr.L.Frank Baum). Mr.Rabbe was also interviewed for many documentaries about the making of the film and he also wrote about his experience in performing in the film in his memoirs. His last public appearance was a year ago at the unveiling of star dedicated to "The Munchkin"actors at Hollywood's "Walk Of Fame". He was always graceious with the fans of the film and he was also willing to talk about his experiences with his fans..including the kids. (Crying) Oh God I'll Miss Him! Goodbye Mr.Rabbe! Still working on my dissertation; "The Tragedy of Comedy", in which I support the theory that what comes from normal beginnings, we then tend to modify or to suit our emotional needs (responses) - Example burlesque material based on minstrel shows which hark back to the drama (tragic) and melo-tragic - These were written for entertainment and could easily have been written off as tragic pieces if not for buffoonish clowns (and I use the expression meaningfully), who enter the picture and turn events around to create pathos - This is the start of serio-comedic art, most exemplified with The Boys, and as I have mentioned when we meet and here, Bud played the tragic voice of looming-dooming disaster, giving the clown, victim or innocent character (Lou), a chance, rather a choice, to go along with the dramatic world (of his own creation) or be consequential and remain in the normal beginnings, of which I mentioned at the start of this message - My research is on-going, and this also aids me as the actor, as well as aficionados - Shorty

I am remembering part of a movie that I saw when I was very young that involved Abbott & Costello being in a home that they could not leave. Apparently they were both ghosts, and something had to be solved before they could leave and rest in peace. Does anyone have any ideas about this memory? Thanks.

My old friend and colleague, journeyman cartoonist Henry Scarpelli passed away on Sunday. Henry drew three of my Archie Comics scripts. He was known for drawing teenage humor comics as well as comics based on TV shows and movie stars. He drew many of the Charlton Abbott & Costello comics based on the animated cartoon series. I put up a little remembrance of Henry on my blog - click here to read it.

Watching "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" is stirring some memories. I was born in '66 so my earliest TV watching memories are from the 1970s. Unless my memory fails me, I remember seeing all the Universal Abbott & Costello movies on channel 11 on Sunday mornings, as well as Eagle Lion's "The Noose Hangs High" and United Artists' "Dance with Me, Henry." I remember that in order to see the three MGM movies or the two Warner Brothers movies, I'd have to turn to channel 2 or channel 4 either overnights on the weekends or sometimes weekend afternoons. Eventually, channel 11 started showing the two Warner films, adding them to the Sunday morning rotation. As for Lou's solo "30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock," I remember seeing that as part of comedy week on channel 7's 4:30 movie. Nice memories. :)

Netflix is now offering "Abbott & Costello in Hollywood" as an "instant view" offering that you can play directly on your computer, or on your TV screen with certain devices. I'm taking a quick look now - I have the DVD but haven't watched it in a while. How cute are those salon girls? Thought I was watching a Wheeler & Woolsey movie ("Hips Hips Hooray" in particular) for a moment... ;)

Netlix also continues to offer "Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy" and "Jack & the Beanstalk" as instant plays. Funny - they now offer one each from three of the four major studios that Bud & Lou were associated with... all they need to do is offer "Africa Screams" or "Dance with Me, Henry" to get United Artists in there...
